CALGARY, Alberta, Canada (WXYZ) – Former Detroit Renaissance and Michigan State football player Mylan Hicks was killed in Calgary, Alberta early Sunday morning, the Calgary Stampeders announced.

According to CBC, hicks was shot and killed outside of a nightclub.

Hicks, 23, played for the Spartans from 2010-2014 and was a three-year letterwinner. He recorded a career-high 19 tackles in nine games during his senior season, according to his Spartan bio.

The Stampeders signed him on May 19 and he was on the team’s practice squad.

“Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “It’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan’s family.”

“The loss of this 23-year-old young man at this stage of his life and his career is an unfathomable tragedy,” said Ken King, president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation. “Our sympathies to Mylan’s family and to the Stampeders family of players, coaches and staff.”
