Figure Skating in Harlem announces expansion in Detroit

(WXYZ) – A national figure skating program for girls is coming to Detroit. Announced at the Campus Martius Tree Lighting, Figure Skating in Harlem is bringing its first satellite academic, figure skating and leadership program to the city of Detroit.

Detroit was selected as the first city in the program’s national expansion, and will partner with the Michigan Women’s Foundation.

In its first year, the program plans to serve 300 Detroit girls between the ages of 6 and 15 with community workshops, summer camps, skating shows and events, and an after-school program where girls receive four to six afternoons weekly of skating instruction and off ice conditioning.

“Figure Skating in Detroit is designed to help young girls build a foundation on ice…a place and a program where young women can realize their full potential through access to information, resources and experiences that may otherwise be out of reach,” FSD Director Geneva Williams said in a release. “This is a youth development opportunity for Detroit’s young women, wrapped around the fun, artistry and discipline of figure skating.”

To participate, the girls must be Detroit residents, and all possible participants will be interviewed with their parent or guardian prior to acceptance.
